Wildcard: Verbatim Theatre

What’s Wildcard?

Each term, we deep dive into a different aspect of the performing arts. We develop skills, boost creativity – and have lots of fun in the process!

In this term’s Wildcard, we’re exploring Verbatim Theatre…

… where we’ll take the exact words spoken by people we interview and use them to create, direct and put on a ‘scratch’ show to be performed at the end of the term. You’ll get to decide on the topic for the play – so come to the first workshop ready to talk about what you think will make a great show!

After a warm-up to develop your performing skills, we’ll take you through every step of the Verbatim Theatre process. Along the way, you’ll develop your listening and interview skills, work up a script and learn lots about developing character, directing and putting on a performance.

It’ll be a great way to have fun, play hard and flex your creative muscles!

Useful to know:

  • no previous theatre experience necessary
  • no auditions for participants or for performance
  • workshops will be task-based with a mix of active exercises and quieter work that involves research, listening and writing
  • the workshops will therefore be suitable for young people who prefer a calmer working environment

We reserve the right to cancel programmes if there are insufficient numbers to allow workshops to run successfully.

This is for you if…

  • you’re keen to be involved in all the different tasks involved in putting on a play – not just performing
  • you want to push yourself creatively
  • you don’t mind a bit of hard work
  • you can work well with others
  • you can be focused and don’t mind some quieter work like researching and drafting script

These classes won’t be suited to everyone—if we feel your child would get more out of an alternative class, we’ll discuss this with you.
